Drilling Practices

This 10-day workshop addresses the operational planning and organization activities facing drilling teams today. With strong linkages to our Well Design and Engineering workshop, Drilling Practices shifts focus from well design to practical implementation of a well plan in the field. Participants work in teams to “drill down” into a prepared well plan, developing both short-term task planning and longer term critical path management activities. The workshop content is often customized to address technologies and practices that may be specific to a project or operational situation.

What You Will Learn

  • Clarify requirements to interact with office subsurface and engineering teams in understanding project expectations.
  • Review basis for tendering and contracting for the rig and other services.
  • Understand benefits of organizing the team to deliver performance improvement.
  • Establish operational foundations in geology, completions, and wellbore stability.
  • Plan pre-spud activities, including rig mobilization and drive pipe operations.
  • Specify rig equipment, including circulating, hoisting, rotary, and pressure control systems.
  • Develop operational practices related to:
    • Fluids, solids control, cuttings handling and fluid swap outs
    • Drill string/BHA and directional tools
    • Bit selection and optimization
    • Casing and cementing operations
    • Non Productive time avoidance caused by hole cleaning, differential sticking, wellbore geometry, tripping practices, and well control
    • Formation evaluation
  • Plan risk mitigations and contingency plans.
  • Present and defend an operational plan to management.

Who Should Attend

Participants are typically operator, drilling contractor and service company engineers with less than 5 years of experience and drilling supervisors and superintendents, especially those new to their position. Class size is typically limited to 18-20. This is an intensive technical workshop. A calculator is required for this workshop and laptop is strongly recommended.

Instructors

Our instructors are degreed engineers with a wealth of well design and on-site operational experience. Two instructors normally team-teach these sessions.

Duration

Typically 10 days
